Environmental evaluation of joint system for freeform structures designed by circle packing (CP) mesh

We advised on the approach for environmental evaluation of the “Design of joint system for free-form structure from planar materials based on circle packing meshes.” First author Keiya Sago of Kyoto University presented this conference paper at the “From Architectural Geometry to Structural Geometry” (WG22) session at the International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures in Turin.

Since beams in each design were assumed to take the same material, beam volume was used as a proxy for upfront embodied carbon. It was demonstrated that the proposed Circle Packing (CP) optimization reduced material quantities in most cases, particularly internal beams to 91.2% of pre-optimization volume (on average out of 500 random samples).

Congratulations to our primary authors Keiya Sago and Prof. Kazuki Hayashi from the University of Kyoto on this innovative proposal for realizing freeform architectural geometries!
