Presenting on office-to-residential conversions at Engineering Mechanics Institute (EMI) Conference 2026

If you’re headed to EMI – Engineering Mechanics Institute Conference 2026 in Boulder this week, keep an eye out for our presentation on Thursday morning: Roman Shipley will be presenting our work on “Case studies in landmark office-to-residential conversions in the United States”. We sought to make sense of this growing instance of adaptive reuse in cities across the US, looking at 75 case studies for statistics and narratives behind the successes and failures of these. Our findings complement the structural engineering challenges involved in such conversions and point towards opportunities to assess conversion feasibility at a stock scale, which would have benefits for both building longevity and sustainability.

Session information

We’re contributing to the session titled “Analysis of Heritage Structures: Tools and Methods for Assessing Unknowns in Historic Monuments and Structures” and appreciate that session chairs explicitly welcomed of interdisciplinary expertise and case studies in their call for presentations.

Roman is partially supported by a PEAK research fellowship from Northeastern and a dissemination award from Northeastern CAMD.
