We are a team of creative and multidisciplinary researchers interested in tackling challenges in environmental impacts of the built environment.
Faculty

Prof. Demi Fang
Principal Investigator
Prof. Demi Fang (pronounced DEE-mee FAHNG) is Assistant Professor at Northeastern University’s School of Architecture at the College of Arts, Media and Design (CAMD). She is affiliated with Civil & Environmental Engineering at the College of Engineering (COE) and joined Northeastern in 2024.
Undergraduate students

Tanvi Agarwal
Co-op / B.S. Computer Science ’28, Concentration in Artificial Intelligence
Tanvi is a computer science student at Northeastern with a strong interest in artificial intelligence, machine learning, scalable backend systems, and quantitative analysis. Her work spans applied ML, data pipelines, and data-driven modeling, with experience designing, building, and deploying production-grade backend systems across research, teaching, and collaborative technical projects. She is deeply engaged in the campus technical community through leadership roles and enjoys working at the intersection of software engineering, computation, and real-world problem solving. Tanvi is particularly interested in using AI and quantitative methods to engineer robust systems for analyzing complex data and supporting informed decision-making. At the Structural Futures Lab, she is applying data analysis and AI-driven approaches to support research on environmental performance and sustainability in architecture.

Kwan To Ryan Chan
B.S. Arch. ’26, DINE minor
Ryan is an architecture student, researcher, and designer from Hong Kong with a passion for computational design and placemaking through architecture. He explores how parametric modeling can generate innovative, context-sensitive solutions that activate spaces, foster interaction, and strengthen community and cultural identity. With experience in research and practice (including a six-month co-op at Safdie Architects), Ryan is committed to pushing design boundaries to create sustainable, expressive, and socially engaging environments that enhance the experiential potential of parametric architecture. At SFL, Ryan is researching pedagogical approaches to visual programming, parametric modeling, and optimization in architecture.

Lang (Samuel) Shao
B.S. Data Science and Mathematics ’26
Lang is a student at Northeastern University studying Data Science and Mathematics, with a strong foundation in data analysis, mathematical reasoning, and visual communication. He is passionate about applying quantitative thinking to real-world challenges; in his previous research experience at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, he contributed data analysis, machine learning, and data visualization to improve neuroimaging workflows in NIH-funded projects. Lang is actively involved in student organizations at Northeastern, and beyond academics, he is an avid music enthusiast, clarinetist, and music producer with a deep connection to sound and creativity. At SFL, Lang is performing building stock analysis, applying his skillsets to support sustainability in architecture.

Roman Shipley
B.S. Arch. ’28, Minor in Civil Engineering
Roman is an architecture student passionate about creating sustainable and historically conscious designs. He applies his minor in civil engineering to make informed design decisions that reduce a building’s embodied carbon and environmental impact from concept to reality. He is driven by a desire to bridge the gap between architectural theory and practical, sustainable building solutions. At SFL, Roman is researching the evolution of sustainable design, exploring how modern strategies of building reuse and the circular economy connect to historic traditions of conservation and preservation. His work synthesizes foundational literature on preservation theory with the material and structural analysis of historic precedents, which he is compiling into a database to help inform a more resource-conscious future for the built environment.
