Prospective PhD students are welcome to apply to work with me through CAMD’s Interdisciplinary Design and Media PhD program. The deadline for admission for fall 2025 is strictly December 1, 2024; more information and upcoming information sessions are available at the CAMD webpage.
Description
This PhD position comes with two years of open-ended funding and three years of teaching assistantship. This year, I am thus open to reviewing candidates with a background that is either within my discipline (computational design and structural engineering in architecture) or beyond (see Desired Qualifications), and I would actively work with accepted candidates to secure RA funding for subsequent years as an alternative to the TA appointments. The Structural Futures Lab is interested in how we design our structures and structure our design workflows to meet societal and environmental needs of the present and future. Our research interests lie at the intersections of data-driven design, the human experience of structural design, and environmental impacts of structural systems. The PhD student would contribute to the lab’s first research output addressing these topics.
Qualifications
Candidates should be passionate about addressing environmental impacts in the built environment and bring creative, technological, and multidisciplinary ideas to approach these challenges. Professional experience is a plus but not required.
Candidates are recommended to demonstrate excellence in one or more of the following related fields: 1) data analysis, visualization, and/or machine learning, including generative design; 2) social or behavioral analysis of multidisciplinary design; 3) structural engineering; 4) life cycle assessment and/or evaluation of buildings’ environmental impacts during design; 5) urban modeling and analysis of construction materials; 6) circularity in the built environment; 7) social analysis of carpentry craft in the maintenance and renewal of buildings; 8) regenerative design principles. A background in architecture or engineering is not required, but motivation to address environmental challenges in building and structural design is essential.
