Prof. Demi Fang was invited to chair a roundtable at the “Is Ise Circular?” symposium at Princeton University’s School of Architecture, organized by Prof. Guy Nordenson (Princeton University.)
The roundtable was titled “Craft, Tools, and Transmission” and guests Prof. Sigrid Adriaenssens (Princeton University) and carpenter Adam Zgola (calling in from Gunma, Japan) were invited to participate.

We enjoyed a rich two days of discussion on the tradition of rebuilding the Ise Shrines and its relationship to circularity of the built environment, including lectures from top experts on the topic.
Our roundtable included a lively discussion on the transmission of carpentry craft across generations and the role of human tactility, in addition to the ways that technology might augment and enhance, rather than interrupt and compete with, that transmission of knowledge.
Thank you for a nostalgic and long-overdue return to my alma mater! What a joy to speak with new colleagues and former mentors, including a visit to Princeton’s CEE department and the Form Finding Lab headed by Prof. Adriaenssens.
